Laboratories

Laboratory of Phonetics

The Laboratory, currently in the process of reactivation, enjoys a long tradition. It was founded in 1914 by Tomás Navarro Tomás, within the framework of the Philology Section directed by Ramón Menéndez Pidal at the Center for Historical Studies of the Junta para Ampliación de Estudios. Navarro Tomás had trained with a pension from the JAE in the main European laboratories – Montpellier, Grenoble, Hamburg, Marburg – . From the CEH he directed the Linguistic Atlas of the Iberian Peninsula (ALPI) and facilitated the recordings of the well-known Word Archive / Archivo de la Palabra.

In the last decades of the twentieth century it was directed by Antonio Quilis, with the support of Margarita Cantarero and M. José Albalá. Later, in the early 2000s, Juana Gil took charge of the modernized Laboratory in the new location at the CCHS on Albasanz Street, with the economic endowment of the CSIC.
