The Department of Literary and Cultural Studies develops a range of research lines focused on the history of literature, cultural and intellectual history, book history, and the visual and performing arts. Key areas of study include the role of literature and the arts — including cinema, music, performance, and urban cultures — in shaping the public sphere, public memory, and contemporary social movements; transatlantic cultural dynamics from the colonial period to the present, with particular attention to the editorial, cultural, and artistic networks that have shaped the ties between Europe and Ibero-America; the history of publishing and cultural industries, with a special focus on the role of women as writers, editors, and creators in literary modernization processes; and the analysis of political, aesthetic, and social ideas from an intellectual history perspective, exploring the relationships between literature, power, and dissent. These research lines incorporate methodologies from the digital humanities — such as the development of databases and the use of computational tools for metadata analysis — which support historical research and contribute to the preservation of Hispanic cultural heritage.
